Trouble in space as Boeing's not going, and China's back from the Moon
Vultures chew over a busy week in orbit with a transatlantic chat
It's been a busy week in space, with Boeing's test pilots still stuck on the International Space Station thanks to their faulty capsule, and then being forced to take shelter from space debris.
The debris came from RESURS-P1, a decommissioned Russian satellite launched in 2013, which broke up this week into over 100 observable pieces, all traveling at around 17,000mph. As the debris field approached the ISS astronauts were forced to take cover in a hardened safety chamber.
Not that the station has long left, as NASA awarded a contract this week to deorbit the platform in 2030. By then there may be a replacement, and there'll almost certainly be a rival in the form of China, which is building its own space station. It's also been a good week for the Middle Kingdom, with the Chang'e-6 re-entry capsule bringing back the first samples from the far side of the Moon.

What next for Kaspersky after US sanctions?
Переглядів 95521 годину тому
This week the US government banned Kaspersky Lab from selling its antivirus and other products in America from next month, and from issuing updates from October. The software maker's top execs, excluding CEO and founder Eugene Kaspersky, were sanctioned on Friday. Joining us for our latest Kettle episode to discuss the fate of this Russian biz is our cybersecurity editor Jessica Lyons plus our ...
Akira poised to be the next big thing in ransomware
Переглядів 67521 день тому
It might not be as big a name as BlackCat or LockBit, but the Akira ransomware is every bit as dangerous, says one cybersecurity researcher, and it's poised to a big impact. Scott Small, director of cyber threat intelligence at Tidal Cyber, tells The Register's Brandon Vigliarolo that most of what Akira is doing is pretty routine for a threat actor. Regardless, Small warns not to underestimate ...
An interview with Joe Sullivan, the convicted Uber CSO

Joe Sullivan - the now-former Uber Chief Security Officer who was found guilty of charges related to covering up a theft of data from Uber in 2016 - remembers sitting down and thinking about the worst-case scenario following his October 2022 conviction. Federal prosecutors wanted to jail Sullivan for 15 months, so at worst he was looking at time behind bars. "In my case, it meant I had to study...

Sodium ion batteries: Yet another innovation poised to be dominated by China

The burgeoning sodium ion battery industry is poised for a big year, says one analyst, but the US could be missing out as China passes America by in another area of technological development. Shazan Siddiqi, senior technology analyst at IDTechEx, who recently wrote a report on the sodium ion battery (SiB) market, told The Register's Brandon Vigliarolo that next-generation SiBs that improve on l...

Digital Realty CTO weighs in on AI's insatiable thirst for power
Переглядів 35521 день тому
It's no secret, by this point, that the GPUs used to train and run generative AI models are power hungry little beasts. So hungry in fact that by some estimates, datacenter could consume 9% of US electricity output by 2030. In light of this explosive growth, some have warned that AI infrastructure could drain the grid. Chris Sharp, CTO at colocation provider Digital Realty, is well aware of the...
Microsoft AI red team tackles potty-mouth chatbots to leaky LLMs

Who cares?! Maybe it will be a little more difficult to use Kaspersky, but with the current technology it is possible to bypass the US regime's ban. As an example, I can take that here in Sweden the Russian media is banned (because Sweden is a dictatorship, like the USA) but with VPN I follow Russian media without problems. Actually the only thing that the American regime has achieved is that it has shown that the USA today is a dictatorship where the regime dictatorially rules over people's lives.

Stopped using Kaspersky after the war started. As someone who since then had to find a suitable alternative to remedy a pc infection, Malwarebytes all the way. I tried Trend Micro, AVG, Avast, etc and none of them were able to remove the infection until I tried Malwarebytes. Also want to say that being the investigation has been 2 years in the making before this move, it really does not come off like a flag-waving move, otherwise it would have been more abrupt and quickly decided. I am certain that after 2 years they have enough evidence to place sanctions without bluffing. Though the CEO missing from the list does leave more questions rather than answers. Hopefully more will come to light soon.

If we ever need a rationale to ban TikTok in the US, we can just borrow the one the Chinese use to ban TikTok at home. Btw, users of TikTok are reporting getting messages from the app urging them to contact their Congress person.

As a resident of Culpeper, this seems a bit Pollyannish. The County can be commended for trying to concentrate data centers into a single area. However, there is growing resistance to data center sprawl here. The Copper Ridge project, in particular, is to be located next to the Culpeper National Military Cemetery, on a hill overlooking town and adjacent to historic districts. The county commissioners just delayed approval of another data center project in the technology zone, and there seems to be increasing skepticism as to how many of these things we need. Furthermore, neither the town nor the county has laid out what the objective is with the proposed data centers. Data centers don't really employ many folks, and the "technology" jobs we should be pursuing are not the technicians who maintain data centers, but the professionals who use technology and who want to move to Culpeper due to its small town charm and rural nature. Yes, tax revenue is nice, but both County and Town are in great shape fiscally, and based on information from one (rejected) data center application at Brandy Station, tax revenue from one campus would be $167 million/year - in excess of the entire budget of the county. There has been no study put forward to my knowledge, as to the financial impacts of data centers on local government revenue.

An NPU wastes a lot of die area? Have you looked at the die plot of an Apple M-series chip? You are just wrong with that statement. The smaller the process the more difficult the routing? What? Do you understand that process progression is accompanied, typically, by an increase the number of metal layers? Memory bandwidth? Again, have you looked at Apple M-series chips? They have plenty of memory bandwidth and they use a very cost-effective design and implementation strategy. The Apple M4--the lowest-end member of the coming M4 family--increased memory bandwidth by 20% to keep pace with the clock rate. It's about 120GB/s. That's a lot for a low-end chip.

He lists technologies that were worked on by many researchers in many countries as somehow belonging to America. We fail exactly because of simple minded nationalists like The Register. This guy literally can’t fathom why South Korea, Japan and Taiwan has stolen American jobs, he can’t comprehend that government and businesses would get together can set national industrial policy.

So many current ideas and products we've seen especially since Covid are ones that several years ago in my company would have been shot down in seconds due to just one or two glaring red flags thought of within milliseconds of the idiot mentioning it. Does nobody do "Pros AND Cons" in their scope meetings for new products and services or do they just ride purely on Pros?

Microsoft is just spamming openai based copilot functionality across its product lines and ecosystem without any clear sense of value to any segment of the user base. The main distinction here between the copilot functionality already found in other microsoft products and this copilot+ pc is that supposedly the pc version does not require you to pay to access functionality from openai on the cloud. In theory at least, because much of the demo appears to be no different from what google displayed with project gemini which likely is mostly fake. And given that microsoft now forces people to use a microsoft email account when installing windows, how is your microsoft identity and office 365 functionality and other standard copilot features (cloud based) going to be separated from this local copilot functionality? This is why the idea of taking screen shots is more of a gimmick than anything useful making this just another example of microsoft bloatware that provides no real value for average users while continuing to consume more and more resources on your pc, which I am sure is to promote hardware upgrades.
